Abstract:
Within the period 1946-1986, Nigeria attempted to operate a centrally planned economy based on a program of economic development planning with social welfarist characteristics which was later renamed “National Development Planning” after Independence. From 1962-1986, National Development Policies were conceived and implemented based on a series of development plan documents. This paper starts with a brief survey of colonial development planning in Nigeria in general and thereafter focused on the National Development Planning programme which was operated within the period between 1946 and 1986.
